How to Set Probationary Period in the Odoo HRMS

HRMS in Odoo provides the module "Employee Contracts" through which probation period for employees can be established. The probation period can also be defined in the contract settings which would manage the probation period of evaluation of the employee before his or her permanent staff status. Here is how you may set up the probationary period in Odoo HRMS step-by-step guide.

How to configure probation period in Odoo HRMS?:

Install Required Modules:

  • Employees and Contracts must be installed in your Odoo instance. These modules are not installed by default. Open the Apps menu, and search for them, then install.


Go to Employee Contracts:

  • Open Employees App.
  • Click on the employee you want to set the probation period for.


Create or Edit a Contract:

  • Inside the employee's profile, select the Contracts tab.
  • Click Add a Contract to add a new contract or open an existing contract to edit.


Contract Details:
     On the contract form, at least

  • Job Position
  • Salary
  • Working Schedule

     You will find that there are fields for Start Date and End Date. These would be needed to determine the probation period.

Determining the Probation Period:

  • Set the date on which the contract should begin - Start Date of the contract (date on which the employee starts).
  • For the End Date, state which date would mark the end of the probationary period, for instance, after 3 or 6 months since the start. The latter will give a certain period for the probationary term.
  • You can include a field, or you could even add a note in the Description section of the contract that details probation terms.

Custom Fields (if necessary):

  • If you need a particular field for probation period, you can create one custom field through Odoo Studio if available.
  • Activate the Developer Mode and open the form of the contract to add a new field like this "Probation Period Duration."
  • This will help track and report over probation periods easily.

Optional Action: Automatic Notifications

  • You can also automate reminders for when an employee's probationary period is ending, and send such reminders automatically to HR or the manager.
  • Go to Settings >Technical > Automation, create an action, and set conditions based on the End Date of the contract.

Save the Contract:

  • After filling in all the details and setting up the probation period, click Save to confirm the contract.
