During the manufacturing of certain products, residual materials, known as by-products, are often produced alongside the finished product. By listing these by-products on a product’s bill of materials (BoM), Odoo can track the quantity of by-products available in stock.
To define by-products in a product's BoM, you must enable the By-Products setting. To do this, go to the Manufacturing app ‣ Configuration ‣ Settings, and check the By-Products option under the Operations section. Finally, click Save to apply the changes.
To add by-products to a BoM, navigate to Manufacturing app ‣ Products ‣ Bills of Materials, and select a BoM.
In the BoM, go to the By-products tab. Click Add a line, then choose the by-product from the drop-down menu. Enter the quantity of the by-product produced during manufacturing in the Quantity field.
If the by-product is generated during a specific operation in a manufacturing order (MO), select the relevant operation in the "Produced in Operation" field. For instance, if scrap wood is produced during the Assemble operation, choose that operation in the "Produced in Operation" field.
When a manufacturing order (MO) is completed and marked as Done, Odoo records the quantity of by-products produced. To create a new MO, go to the Manufacturing app ‣ Operations ‣ Manufacturing Orders, and click New.
In the Bill of Materials field, select a BoM that includes by-products. The Product field will automatically populate with the corresponding product. Click Confirm to finalize the MO.
Once manufacturing is completed, click the Produce All button at the top of the MO. This updates the inventory counts to reflect the quantities of both the by-product(s) and the main product produced.
Click the Product Moves smart button at the top of the MO page to view the movement of components and products. On the resulting Inventory Moves page, each by-product is listed, with the From column showing the virtual production location and the To column indicating where the by-product is stored.
